How to Install MariaDB 11.8 LTS on Fedora 44

Install MariaDB 11.8 LTS from Fedora 44’s DNF packages, initialize the service, and create a database and application user.

Fedora 44 provides MariaDB 11.8 through its native DNF repositories. The Fedora package listing currently shows MariaDB 11.8.8; minor updates may arrive through normal Fedora package updates. This guide uses Fedora’s distribution packages rather than a separate MariaDB repository.

Prerequisites

  • Fedora 44 with internet access.
  • A user account with sudo privileges.
  • A fresh MariaDB installation, or a verified backup before replacing an existing MySQL or MariaDB server.

Install MariaDB

Update Fedora and install the MariaDB server package:

sudo dnf upgrade --refresh
sudo dnf install mariadb-server

Check the installed client version:

mariadb --version

Start and Verify the Server

Enable the MariaDB service at boot and start it now:

sudo systemctl enable --now mariadb
sudo systemctl status mariadb --no-pager

Fedora initializes the database cluster when the server package is installed. Check the running server version:

sudo mariadb --execute='SELECT VERSION();'

On Linux, MariaDB’s local root account uses Unix socket authentication by default. Use sudo for local administrative access:

sudo mariadb

Create an Application Database and User

At the MariaDB prompt, create a database and a local-only runtime account with row-level privileges. Replace the example password with a unique secret; use a separate account for schema migrations:

CREATE DATABASE appdb;
CREATE USER 'appuser'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'Replace-with-a-long-random-password';
GRANT SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE ON appdb.* TO 'appuser'@'localhost';
EXIT;

Connect with the application account and verify access:

mariadb --user=appuser -p appdb

Enter the password when prompted, then run:

SHOW TABLES;

Manage the MariaDB Service

Use systemd to check or control the service:

sudo systemctl status mariadb --no-pager
sudo systemctl restart mariadb
sudo systemctl stop mariadb
