SQL Server CURRENT_DATE

CURRENT_DATE returns the current database system date as a date value. It includes no time or time-zone offset and takes no arguments. Microsoft lists it for SQL Server 2025 (17.x), Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and SQL database in Microsoft Fabric; see the CURRENT_DATE reference.

Syntax

CURRENT_DATE

CURRENT_DATE is the ANSI SQL equivalent of CAST(GETDATE() AS date). It is nondeterministic because the value changes with the current system date.

Examples

Get the current date on SQL Server 2025 (17.x) or one of the supported Azure services:

SELECT CURRENT_DATE AS current_date;

For SQL Server 2022 and earlier, convert the current datetime value to date:

SELECT CONVERT(date, GETDATE()) AS current_date;

For today’s date in UTC rather than the server’s current system date, use CONVERT(date, SYSUTCDATETIME()).
